F A Q S

  • PGH Plant Lady believes that the best food is homegrown. Starting a backyard garden gives your family access to fresh, nutritious produce free of pesticides and chemicals. Growing your own food at home also means less trips to the grocery store and plenty of savings over time. Most importantly, growing your own food is a great way to reconnect with nature. Your garden is your safe space to slow down, soak in the sun, and get your hands dirty as you enjoy the company of a wide variety of plants.

  • A garden consultant works with clients to plan, design, install, and grow their dream garden. We specialize in edible plants, as our goal is to help clients maximize food production through traditional back yard gardens and edible food forests. We can also help support beginner and intermediate gardeners with their existing gardens and help them to improve soil quality, garden more sustainably, manage pests and disease, and design gardening systems that work for them. Please see our services tab for more information about what we do.

  • While we are firm believers that anyone can learn to garden without the help of a consultant, we also know that there are significant hurdles to starting a garden. Installing a garden can be time and labor intensive and also a bit overwhelming. Hiring a garden consultant means that you don't have to bother with the designing, planning, or installation of your garden. Having the help of a seasoned gardener means that a real person can teach you everything you need to know - like what to plant, when to plant it, what to plant it with, and how to care for your plants to maximize your yield. A good garden consultant will be there to help you meet your gardening goals, save you money at the grocery store, and help you feed your friends and family with healthy, homegrown produce. A garden consultant can also be a great option for those who want the benefit of homegrown produce - without the work of maintaining your garden because someone else is doing it for you!

  • You might be surprised to know that you can garden for most of the year here in Pittsburgh - all it takes is the right tools. We are available to help with your traditional spring and summer vegetable gardens, but can also provide support and help install fall gardens for cool weather crops, fall garlic planting, cold frames for fall and winter growing, and can help you extend your growing season even further with greenhouse growing. We are also available all year round for house plant sitting and care.

  • Our speciality is edible landscaping and gardening. Within your spring and summer gardens we work with a wide variety of fruits, veggies, and edible plants. We can help you grow traditional garden veggies like tomatoes, zucchini, and green beans. We also work with a variety of fruit trees, bushes, and other plants like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and apple trees. We are huge fans of low maintenance edible perennials like rhubarb and asparagus. Last but not least, we love to work with medicinal and edible herbs. If you're looking for any ornamental, shade, or flowering perennial plants to supplement your edible garden we primarily work with plants native to Western Pennsylvania or those that are minimally disruptive to local ecosystems (or wherever you are located). We do supplement summer gardens with non-native annuals like marigolds and zinnias. We also have plant starts available for sale in spring and early summer. We sell black beauty eggplants and a variety of pepper and tomato plants. We also sell a variety of herbs. Plant starts are available upon request.

  • Here at PGH Plant Lady, we prefer to work in a way that minimizes harm to your own plants and the broader ecosystem around your garden. If possible, we prefer no till gardening to minimize soil disruption when installing in ground gardens. We also use raised garden beds or containers for clients with heavy clay soils, poor drainage, or poor soil health. We learned to garden organically and look to manage weeds and pests without the use of herbicides or pesticides whenever possible. While there are some invasive species that may require more aggressive management - we try to limit our use of traditional pesticides as much as possible. We believe that gardeners and all plant lovers are stewards of the plant. As a result, we look to garden as sustainably as possible.
